Wandering mules

Orlu
31 July
Another lovely valley in the foothills of the Pyrénées, Orlu is beyond Niaux and beyond Ax-les-Thermes, the nearest place marked on maps. Accompanied by Sarah, Chris and the Hangartner children, Laura, Dawn and Alice, I really enjoyed the walk following the valley past the Dent d’Orlu, an impressive ‘tooth’ against the skyline. This is where photos are more useful than words. A moderate gradient but consistently up.
We stopped at a fork in the tracks about 5pm, crossed the mountain stream using stepping stones just for fun, and began the downhill journey. A novelty for us was wandering mules on the track – mules that seemed to making their own way home to where they can be hired from – sometimes with packs and sometimes not. Returning travellers sometimes asked us if we had passed a packed mule on our way up! You can hire them for days at a time to lighten your load! Useful for carrying children too, it seems.
